PINK FLOYD FOOTBALL CLUB Was that ever a thing? Absolutely it was! The Pink Floyd Football Club 1st XI played whenever the opportunity arose against journalists, other bands, and even on one occasion a team made up of dancers and staff from the Ballet de Marseille. The picture of Pink Floyd Football Club 1st XI above is from the album cover of ‘A Nice Pair’. This was the compilation album released in 1973 featuring their first two albums, ‘The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn’ and ‘A Saucerful Of Secrets’. Roger Waters is a committed Arsenal fan whilst David Gilmour had a season-ticket there for several years, and it has been suggested that there were occasional interruptions in the production of the Dark Side Of The Moon album caused by visits to home games at Highbury. The lyrics of ‘Money’ from that album talk about, ‘New car, caviar, four star daydream Think I'll buy me a football team’ Would they really have bought a football team? The most recent involvement of a Pink Floyd member in football is drummer Nick Mason, who has done almost precisely that. Nick is, of course better known for his love of motor sport and all things Ferrari, but in 2019 he was part of a consortium that put money into saving Bolton Wanderers Football Club. I don’t imagine we’ll see him on the terraces anytime soon though as at 76 years of age he is still busy touring with ‘A Saucerful of Secrets’. In other football connections, the track ‘Fearless’ from the Meddle album features the sound of ‘The Kop’ at Anfield singing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, and the track ‘The Gunner’s Dream’ from The Final Cut album was supposedly named by Waters with a nod to his favourite club, although the song has absolutely nothing to do with football. And in a not totally unconnected way, the band are playing at the Globe Arena, the home of Morecambe Football Club in just a few weeks, on Friday 6th March 2020 just to reinforce the idea that Pink Floyd are not without their connections to football. Tickets for our Globe Arena gig are available from the event link on this website, from our website www.ironbell.uk, from the club or from The View café, 99 Marine Road Central, Morecambe.
